Samsung Announces Transparent & Mirrored OLED Displays
Samsung’s display division has introduced Industry’s first Mirror and Transparent OLED displays in Hong Kong today.
The idea is to make the "consumer purchasing experience more visually engaging," according to the press release. It mentions fitting rooms where customers can model clothing and jewelry before purchase, all with the help of Intel Real Sense, a technology that utilizes enhanced 3D cameras, voice and gesture control, and an automated library of stored "perceptions."
The new Samsung Display OLED panel technology provides a digital viewing platform for making the consumer purchasing experience more visually engaging. When Samsung’s OLED display technology is integrated with Intel® Real Sense™ technology, a visually compelling, interactive closet or “self-modeling” wardrobe is created that can enable consumers to virtually “see” clothes or other retail items from an extremely realistic, customized perspective.
The transparent OLED display beats the existing LCDs, too. It's more transparent, letting through 40 percent of the light versus the barely there 10 percent transparency of today's transparent LCDs. It has a higher color gamut than competing LCDs (100 percent of NTSC versus 70 percent), and, of course, neither OLED display needs a backlight.
“Customers will be able to go to leading stores around the world to see retail items in ways that will greatly enhance point-of-purchase shopping as we know it today,” explained a Samsung spokesperson.
